Australia Day Tournament 2010 – Report, Results & Photos

What an amazing day for tennis! Beautiful weather, superb tennis and lots of laughs made for an excellent tournament. Everyone got into the spirit of the day by wearing their Australian gear, but the best dressed went to the "Highly Strung Quokkas" who all wore personalised T-Shirts - courtesy of their captain Daniel Milligan.

Despite the day being promoted as a "fun day of tennis", we couldn’t help but be competitive on the court and this year the competition was close. Of the ten teams, the first nine all scored within 15 points of each other - this showed just how even the competition had been.

The final results were:

  • 1st - Wombats – John Needham (team captain), Peter Gilchrist, Karen Williams, Steve Sutherland, Phil Shea, Roger Cooper, Mike Tory and Jessica Shea.
  • 2nd - Fairy Penguins – Michael Sutherland (team captain), Michelle Gilchrist, Grant Vernon, Chris Lavender, Anne Raisbeck and Dawn Bonzas.
  • 3rd - Fluffy Gliders – Yvonne Orzanski (team captain), Larelle Firns, Tony Orzanski, Simone Firns, Eric Larson, Debra Waters and Jim Bonzas.

As for the brains in the competition, the only team to answer all questions correctly for the annual Aussie Day Quiz were the "Dingoes" - well done!

After a full afternoon of tennis the ten teams sat down for a "coldie" and some nibbles before a delicious Aussie meal of sausages, meat and salad, followed by "the pav"! It was the perfect way to end what was a perfect way to celebrate Australia Day!
